Description: Elegant Steven Newell contemporary British studio glass vase, the etched grey body of square inverted baluster form with flared neck and prunted stylized handles, unpolished pontil and signed “Newell” at the base. It measures 10” in height, 5-1/2” wide with prunts and 4” without the prunts. The top opening is 3-1/4” in diameter and the base is 3” in diameter. Steven Newell was born in 1948. He attended both Kansas City Art Institute (1969) and Carnegie-Mellon University, completing his BFA degree in Ceramics and Glass in 1972. The same year he was offered and accepted a place at the Royal College of Art, London and completed his MA in Glass in 1974. On leaving the Royal College, he joined The Glasshouse in Covent Garden, later to become a Director in 1976. In 1977 he was awarded his first major international prize: the Coburg Glaspreis. In 1986 he set up Glassworks London ltd. At this point Steven's work progressed in two different directions; repeatable items and one-off pieces. Today these still constitute the two main strands of his work. The hand blown production work that he has developed over the last 20+ years, now part of the Art for Glass range, are sold internationally with great success. Steven's one-off pieces have taken may forms over the years and have been shown in many major exhibitions and are both publicly and privately commissioned. In recent years this body of work has often taken figurative forms, etched plates perhaps his signature work and in architectural pieces, in particular stained glass windows and cast glass pieces.
