Vase has a broken tip, but would be worth a repair as vase is from a well known artist and possibly valuable. Intrigued by potters throwing on a wheel at the Sacramento State Fair back in 1960, Steven had to be pulled away to leave with his family. And while he didn’t work with clay until many years later, the seed had been planted. In 1979, while living in Monterey, CA, a friend encouraged him to take a night class with Mr. Paul White in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It was a class that would forever change his life. It seemed that working with clay came naturally… a gift. Although he was working in construction as a drywall finisher at the time, he knew he had found his passion. Later that year, he moved to Venice Beach, bought a potter’s wheel, and began throwing. He began scouring library books of Japanese and Chinese potters from the past, feeling like those shapes were most masterful. In a short time, he began selling his works at craft shows, with an eye for clean lines and form. At one small show, Steven was approached by the owner of a design showroom, located in Beverly Hills, CA about making larger scale ceramics vases. This started his work in the direction of larger pieces, including bowls and platters, and soon art venues were carrying Klinsky ceramics in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Laguna Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Seattle, WA, Chicago, IL, and Phoenix, AZ. During this time, his works were purchase by celebrities, such as Merv Griffin, Peter Cetera ( rock group Chicago), Sen. Fred Leeds, and Matthew & Iris Strauss. Living and working in Encinitas, CA for the past 30 years, Steven has been able to enjoy both his artwork, and his passion for surfing. His love of the ocean and nature can easily be seen in the freedom of shape and flow of his pieces. There is a feeling of life3 in each piece that sets his work apart. From 1994 to 2004, due to exceptionally large demand for his work in Scottsdale, AZ, Klinsky ceramics were only available through Pearson & Company in Scottsdale. During that time, many high-profile clients purchase his work, including Golden Glove baseball player Devon White, and quarterback Jake Plummer, along with many corporate collectors. Steven also spent some time teaching pottery classes at the Florblanca Resort, in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica in 2003, and upon returning to SoCal, he juried into the prestigious La Jolla Art Association. Then in 2005, he became a charter member of the Allied Artist Association of San Diego, and later that year was voted in as a board member of the AAASD. This is when Steven began working with crystalline glazes, and learned to sculpt figurative pieces. In 2009, Steven started to jury into major fine art shows all over the US, with shows in Sarasota and Jupiter FL, Louisville KY, Chicago IL, Ann Arbor MI, Dallas TX, Aspen CO, Salem OR, Scottsdale AZ, and Beverly Hills CA. During this time, his work grew considerably. After totaling his van when a large deer slammed into him in MI, and tired of all of the travel, Steven decided to focus attention on galleries in his home state of CA, and focus clearly on the life he loves. Completely self-taught, sculpting opened up a completely new form of self-expression to him. Works of thanksgiving, love, charity, and peace flowed from his hands as he let the clay speak through him. Working in this new medium of sculpture touched something deep inside, and started him on a wonderful spiritual journey that has brought new joy to his life and work. The marriage of his sculpture with the very difficult to master technique of crystalline glazes, was perfection. A few hundred people worldwide work with crystalline glazes, but Steven has been told by top ceramic experts that he is possibly the only one using these glazes on original fine art sculpture.
