Reed & Barton's Pompeian appears to date from 1930, though it looks as though it should be somewhat older. It has a simple Neo Classical elegance about it. This is a pattern that has been undeservedly overlooked for some time. Like most Reed & Barton lines of plated ware, it was made both for home use and for better hotels, railroads and ships. Because of this, it stands up very well to use. The fruit knife shows us that people used to eat a lot more fruit than we do. Old silverware had many things for serving fruit, yet nothing for broiled meat. The fruit knife is a small knife with a blade like a razor (handle it carefully), designed for eating whole fruit. The eater holds the fruit in her hand and carefully cuts bite sized pieces. She then uses a strawberry fork to convey the fruit to her mouth. If out walking , she puts the fruit in her mouth with her fingers. Putting the silver knife blade in one's mouth was considered in bad taste, and dangerous while walking. This handy little item was rendered superfluous by modern dentistry. It existed in large part because most adults had so many dental problems they could not bite into an apple. They needed a means of getting bite sized pieces into the mouth. That the fruit knife does. The 5 hollow handle fruit knives with plated blades offered here measure about 6 3/4. These are not pieces of new silver. These items show the patina of as much as 95 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. The pattern is crisp and clear. These knives have been carefully used and well cared for. I polish all silver before listing on eBay.
