However, it was worth the wait for Peter Gabriel's first album with new material since 2002's 'Up'.It’s time to admire his completed work – 12 tracks that testify to his ability as a composer, but also to his captivating voice that still sounds great. Often thought-provoking songs touch on themes of life and the universe. The album focuses on our relationship with the world around us - "I'm just a part of everything", sings Peter on the title track.The recurring theme intertwines with the passage of time, mortality and regret, but also themes such as injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. While reflective, the album's mood is never depressing - "i/o" is an adventurous musical experience based on hope, culminating in the optimistic song "Live and Let Live" closing the album.Peter has long sought to push boundaries that most artists are reluctant to cross. "i/o" isn't just a collection of a dozen or so songs - each of the 12 tracks has been subjected to two stereo mixes: the Bright-Side Mix by Mark "Spike" Stent, and the Dark-Side Mix by Tchad Blake.Peter created the album with a trusted circle. There are reliable guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Manu Katché. A few songs feature the influence of longtime collaborator Brian Eno, as well as the contributions of artists such as Richard Russell, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeters Josh Shpak and Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson and Peter's keyboards daughter Melanie. Her contribution to the choirs works perfectly with vocals by Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath, while Real World regulars Richard Chappell, Oli Jacobs, Katie May and Richard Evans have worked together to program and play various instruments.
