PANORAMA OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG SOUVENIR BOOKLET 1884 #110

Description: This is an extremely rare souvenir booklet that accompanied a visitor to the Cyclorama painting by Paul Philippoteaux when it was “permanently” on display at the “Corner of Wabash and Hubbard Court, Chicago, Illinois”. The Cyclorama is a painting of the Battle of Gettysburg done in 360 degrees showing the fields of battle surrounding the High Water Mark primarily focusing on the climatic event of the battle known as Picket’s Charge. The booklet has a foldout black and white illustration of the cyclorama along with identified points of interest. Because of the size of the illustration of the cyclorama and its delicate nature we have chosen to only photograph the central section of it. Rest assured that the illustration is complete, intact, and in very good condition. It is a wonderful look into the public perception of the Battle of Gettysburg only about 21 years after the event took place. In addition to much information about the battle, a map of the battlefield, the participants, and history of the event, the booklet also has many wonderful advertisements. The booklet measures 6 inches by 9 ¼ inches. There is toning to the paper, wear along the spine, and the usual chips, foxing and folds associated with a piece of ephemera that was never intended to survive for long. Although we would label it as fragile, it can comfortably be opened and studied. This is a very special item that will be the crowning piece in any ephemera collection of the Civil War. If you can find another better copy of this item, then you should probably buy it as there cannot be many of them that have survived.
