Description: Beautiful ca.1920's painting by American artist, Mary Anderson. Oil on canvas glued down to illustration board, measures 21 x 25.75 inches. Unframed. Some loss around margin as seen here with one puncture hole also (on bridge area). One tear in canvas at roof, about 1.5 inches in length. Dirt and yellowed varnish will need to be removed by professional. Clearly someone conducted test cleaning areas, and you can seen the subtle, beautiful colors beneath. Signed lower left. Noteworthy about this piece is that it suggests Anderson studied abroad: a hitherto unknown detail about her life. Mary Anderson (20th century), one of the Brown County school of artists, spent most of her career in Indiana and Kentucky, near the Ohio River. She also worked as an illustrator, having created both the Morton Salt girl and the character for Old Dutch Cleanser. Anderson exhibited at the Hoosier Salon. The book, Hoosier Salon 1925-1990, lists 14 of her works shown in the Salon 1928-1937. She won five prizes in 1928.
