Harry Aiken Vincent, A.N.A. (1864-1931), was an American painter and etcher born in Chicago, Illinois. He was self-taught and established a studio in Hyde Park, Chicago in 1892. He relocated to New York City in 1897 and maintained a studio at 155 W. 29th Street, New York from 1907 to 1917. During this period he visited Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts to paint harbor and marine scenes on Cape Ann. He relocated his studio to Rockport, MA in 1917 and was elected as the first President of the Rockport Art Association in 1921. He is considered one of the founding members and Dean of the Rockport School of Artists A. T. Hibbard, W. Lester Stevens, Frederick Mulhaupt, Paul Cornoyer, Hugh Henry Breckenridge, and others. During his years in Rockport, he frequently traveled to the coastal fishing villages of France, Venice, Chiogga, Italy, and North Africa to sketch and paint. Vincent is best known for his bold impressionistic marine, harbor, and waterfront scenes; especially interested in the themes of the commonplace in the working harbor---unloading fish, drying sales, boats, and watermen at work. He befriended many fishermen and they often took him out to sea so he could study their work, boats, and harbor closely. Harry A. Vincent was elected as an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design, (ANA), Allied Artists of America, New York Watercolor Club, North Shore Art Association, Rockport Art Association, and Salmagundi Club. He regularly exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Salmagundi Club, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, New York Watercolor Club and elsewhere. His works were awarded prizes at numerous exhibitions. He is listed in Who Was Who in American Art, 1564-1975, edited by Peter Falk, Artists of the Rockport Art Association, Fielding, Benezit, Millet, and other art references. The hardcover book Harry A. Vincent, A.N.A. and His Contemporaries by Judith A. Curtis published by the Rockport Art Association in 2006 reviews his life and art. This is a fixed-price sale, however I will consider offers.
