This is the original orange cloth cover format with the original jacket. The jacket is price clipped, but otherwise sound. There is some foxing at the edges. Covers are bright and clean. Binding is solid. This has the original silhouette illustrations by Syd Brown. The text is clean and bright. There is some wear and damage to the upper margins of the pages toward the end of the book. There are small chips and stray bits of paper on the top edge of pages 159 to 161. And a chip at the top of the page in the Little Orphant Annie chapter. The book grades on as good. Jacket grades very good. This is better than might be expected for a children's book around 80 years old. James Whitcomb Riley was a very popular poet in his day. He was integral to the culture of the time. He wrote many poems for children that were still being published into the later 20th century. This book was published in 1942 when Riley's poetry was still deeply imbedded into the general populace. Glimpsing the life of a child in 19th century Indiana is interesting and informative. So even if your child hasn't met a Riley poem, the life he led and how he became such a famous writer is well worth learning about. This will be packed carefully to prevent damage in shipment.
