Description: A stunning Art Nouveau silver plated letter opener made by German company WMF in around 1905. It features beautiful fir cones and pine needles set on a sinuous organic stem which forms the handle.Signed WMF, it carries the mark I/O which is a reference to the quantity of silver in the plating, and it has the characteristic dark patination associated with much Art Nouveau silverware. It would make a wonderful addition to a collection of Art Nouveau silverware or desk accessories. A fabulous gift for the person who has everything!WMF opened in 1853 as metal repairing workshop Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer and was renamed in 1880 Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF). By the 1900s they were producing household metalware, mainly in the Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau style, designed in the WMF Art Studio under Albert Mayer, sculptor and designer, who was director from 1884 to 1914.The letter opener is in very good antique condition.
