Description: Seraphime Mike passed away July 5th at his home in Gulfport, Florida, a week before what would have been his 99th birthday. "Mr. Mike" will be remembered by many as the quintessential gentleman, an exquisitely talented and remarkably dedicated role model and inspiration for generations of students. After a number of years in the Detroit schools, he taught for 37 years 1949-1986 in Roseville, Michigan, and was an active and influential MSBOA member and officer. The performing arts auditorium in Roseville bears his name.~~Seraphime played clarinet and served as an assistant director in two Florida community bands right through his 90’s until the COVID-19 pandemic. His students were primed for (if gently resistant) to be on the receiving end of his “groaner” jokes. In his later years, he told one describing what would probably be inscribed on his gravestone: “See, I told you we should’ve put a breath mark in there.” ~~Proud of his Greek heritage, he told the story of his grandfather’s surname, “Emmakouelidis” being mangled so much upon coming to the United States, that an official in charge just gave up and changed it to “Mike.” Seraphime attended Detroit Eastern High School as a youth, playing on the football team, but thousands of future students are fortunate that he learned to play clarinet well enough to help make money for the family with dance band gigs. Seraphime taught his students music, exposing them to culture that inspired them. Beyond music, he taught his students to take pride in their work, loyalty, effort, ethics and humility. Those students were fortunate to have known him.
