Also included is the historic 1965 Western Conference playoff game at Lambeau Field, Packers vs Colts! All four original films have now been restored by Rare Sportsfilms and all are in beautiful COLOR! The Browns highlight film, narrated by Ken Coleman and presented by Coca Cola, as well as the Packers highlight film, narrated by Packer broadcaster Ray Scott, each show the outstanding games from the regular season. The “Sudden Death” game at Lambeau Field, presented by National Beer, is narrated by Colt’s broadcaster Chuck Thompson and the NFL Title game is also narrated by Ray Scott. 1965 Cleveland Browns “A Winning Tradition” – The Browns repeated as Eastern champions in 1965 with a half-game better record than their World Championship club of the year before. Even with Paul Warfield sidelined much of the year and an aging defense, it was a well-balanced team with a strong offensive line, steady Frank Ryan at quarterback, ’64 Title game hero Gary Collins at flanker and of course, the fabulous Jimmy Brown at fullback. In ’65 Jim again lead the NFL in rushing, the 8th time in his 9 years as a player! Forty-one-year-old Lou Groza was still dependable, young Leroy Kelly was an excellent punt returner, Walt Roberts a dangerous kickoff return man and Gary Collins was a fine punter in addition to his pass-catching chores. In these films, other Browns you’ll see include Jim Ninowski, Tom Hutchinson, Sidney Williams, Vince Costello, Johnny Brewer, Bobby Franklin, Ralph Smith, Dale Lindsey, Ross Fichtner, Walter Beach, Galen Fiss, Bill Glass, Jim Kanicki, Larry Benz, Dick Modzelewski, Walter Johnson, John Wooten, Gene Hickerson, Jim Houston, Dick Schafrath, Paul Wiggin and Ernie Green. 1965 Green Bay Packers “The Packers in Action” – The acquisition of kicker Don Chandler from the New York Giants was a key Green Bay addition for 1965. This and the development of Marv Fleming, Doug Hart and Tom Brown into starters improved the Packers enough to tie for the Western Conference Championship by the end of the regular season. This 1965 Packers highlight film shows the games, plays and the now legendary players who, after a two-year absence, brought another World Championship to “Titletown, USA”. Included are QB’s Bart Starr, Zeke Bratkowski, and Dennis Claridge, Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung, Tom Moore, Elijah Pitts, Bill Anderson, Max McGee, Boyd Dowler, Carroll Dale, Bob Long, Ken Bowman, Forrest Gregg, Fuzzy Thurston, Jerry Kramer, Ron Kostelnik, Henry Jordan, Willie Davis, Lionel Aldridge, Dave Robinson, Ray Nitschke, Lee Roy Caffey, Bob Jeter, Herb Adderley and Willie Wood. 1965 Western Conference Playoff at Lambeau Field “Sudden Death” – A memorable and controversial game still talked about by knowledgeable NFL: fans! With identical 10-3-1 records at season’s end, the Packers and last year’s Western Champion Colts tie for the Conference championship, but with two regular season wins over the Colts already, the Packers earn the right to host a Western Conference Playoff at Lambeau Field. This classic is a thriller, with breaks of the game see-sawing momentum back and forth throughout, and after 60 minutes of regulation play the game is still tied, 10-10! Don Chandler’s field goal after almost another full 15 minutes of play decides the game – only the second “sudden death” overtime game in NFL history! The 1965 NFL Championship Game “Elements of Victory” – No one knew it at the time, but this would be the great Jim Brown’s last NFL game. Aptly titled because of typical late December Green Bay weather, the film of the NFL Championship Game begins with a helicopter and snow sweepers clearing the field. It’s unfrozen but muddy, making straight-ahead running plays best for the afternoon. Bart Starr crosses up the Browns on the first series of downs by throwing the ball, hitting Carroll Dale with a long pass that gives Green Bay a quick 7-0 lead. Cleveland retaliates with a steady drive downfield and scores on an out pattern to Gary Collins in the end zone. The extra point try fails however, and the Browns still trail, 7-6. Lou Groza’s FG gives the Browns a 9-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Another FG by Groza in the second period plus two made by Chandler bring the halftime score to 13-12 Green Bay. The Packer defense is dogging Jim Brown, while Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung are following strong blocking and eating up yardage. In the third quarter the Browns are particularly frustrated by an important 11-play, 90-yard Green Bay drive that uses up almost half of the clock and increases the Packer margin by 7 more points, 20-12. The Green Bay defense shuts out the Browns the entire second half, but it is the Packer offensive line which controls the game, constantly knocking Cleveland defenders back to make running room for Hornung and Taylor in a 23-12 Green Bay victory. Paul Hornung has 18 carries for 105 yards, and Jim Taylor with 27 carries for 96 yards is named the game MVP.
