Description: I have here for sale a handsomely bound VOLUME 1 (only) of THE STONES OF VENICE by JOHN RUSKIN. This edition was published as a 2 volume set. Published in 1898 by George Allen London. With illustrations drawn by the author with 21 plates (all present), including colour tissue guarded plates, drawings within the text. The Stones of Venice examines Venetian architecture in detail, describing for example over eighty churches. Ruskin discusses architecture of Venice's Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance periods, and provides a general history of the city. Beautifully bound in half leather over red marbled boards. Gilt title lettering to red and green blocks to the spine, which has 5 raised gilt bands, with gilt embossed decoration between. Age darkening of the board edges. Marbled fore-edges matching endpapers. Pencil notes on the verso of the ffep.
